Web Illustration: Interactive House

This piece was commissioned by a company called Simple Energy that helps consumers track their home energy usage. For publication on the web, it is an interactive illustration with parts that when clicked, display more information about that element. In order to design this functionality, the illustration has 2 views: a grayscale version with the clickable parts in color, and the full color piece.

It was complex to design and took a lot of planning for the details to work right. Sections like utilities and entertainment needed to be visually grouped. Small elements had to be made big enough to be clickable. Large elements like the van and pool couldn't be too attention grabbing. I didn't want buttons or other graphics to mess with the artwork which is why color is used to signify where to click when the cursor hovers over it.

I kept the palette simple as not to overly clutter the piece and give it a modern feeling. But I also wanted it to be warm and inviting. It turned out quite slick. While I've illustrated a lot of architecture, the new challenges of this interactive piece made it an exciting project.

New Art: School Ground Banners

These five illustrations were commissioned for the Shining Mountain Waldorf School in Boulder, Colorado to hang on lamppost banners around their grounds.

Each depicts a unique area of the school with its eclectic grounds and architecture. I enjoyed this project for capturing the variety of artful elements across the school grounds.

A poster with all the images can be purchased here to support the school.

New Poster Series: Carousel of Happiness

New Poster Series: Carousel of Happiness

Not one hand-carved, wooden animal on the Carousel of Happiness in Nederland, Colorado is the same species. There are 36 different animals to ride and 25 more that decorate the environment. I was commissioned to create a poster series celebrating six of the most popular animals.

I set out to create a look that was both contemporary and vintage. The bold, stylized animals are visually modern, as is the color palette across the series. In contrast, the decorative border and classical typography recalls the carousel's Victorian heritage.

The border is composed of imagery from animals and ornamentation on the carousel itself, to the horns of the vintage Wurlitzer that provides its music. The bottom center features the building that houses the indoor carousel. The corner ovals feature other facets of the carousel's story - the puppet theater inside the building, and a view of the mountain landscape surrounding the area.

The series will be sold as posters and postcards in the carousel's gift shop. If you're in Colorado, plan a visit to the Carousel of Happiness.

The carousel posters are also available online in my shop.

New Art: Mid-Century Home Portrait

I often get commissioned to do home portraiture in my signature poster style. It's a fresh take on a type of art that is typically done in traditional mediums and styles.

This piece was commissioned by a real estate agent as a closing gift for a couple who has lived in this home for over forty years. I was not present when the gift was given, but the artwork moved them to tears. While I enjoy illustrating for companies, creating art that is deeply meaningful to someone is one of the greatest joys of doing home portraits.

New Art: Restaurant Ordering Illustrations

I was commissioned by New York company, OrdrUs, to create a series of illustrations to help sell their service to restaurants. They provide online and mobile takeout ordering.

After doing a series of slick, colorful illustrations, they decided to scratch those for a different approach. I developed this rough line and watercolor style to supports their non-technical approach to selling their technology.

These were all created on my iPad with the Procreate app and a Jot Touch pressure sensitive stylus. I've been doing more professional illustration on the iPad lately.

There are over 20 illustrations in the series... and counting.

10 Web Illustrations: Restaurant Ordering

These illustrations were created for a startup that built an app for restaurant owners. However, the company chose not to use these illustrations after all. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes my art never reaches its intended purpose. But don't worry, I've been creating different illustrations for the same company in a visual style more suitable to their audience.

New Poster: Lyons, Colorado Flood Relief

Having personally experienced the 2013 Colorado flood, this was a commission I could not pass up. The town of Lyons along the foothills of the Rockies suffered catastrophic damage from the flood. With damage in the millions of dollars, the community needs ongoing funds to rebuild. I created this poster as an image that the community can rally around in their restoration efforts.

Posters, t-shirts, and water bottles with the art are being sold as a fundraiser. The art has also been made into banners to line the streets of downtown Lyons. It warms my heart that my art can help a community in their time of need.

2014 Bolder Boulder Poster

2014 Bolder Boulder Poster

As an illustrator, I feel it's important to explore different paths of my creativity. It's how I grow as an artist and what keeps me inspired. While I enjoy working in a variety of aesthetics, I must balance that desire with clients that commission me for the style they know I do. Every so often, I take a chance.

Illustrated using the drawing app, Sketch.

The 2014 Bolder Boulder poster is a new visual style combining angular shapes inspired by Art Deco design with complex color gradients made possible by digital illustration tools.

The shapes of the runners were meticulously crafted with stark, straight lines, yet maintain the organic movement of their stride. Trees, of which I usually illustrate with silhouettes, are built with elaborate flowing shapes to give them depth and light. And the Flatirons, of which I've drawn over 40 times, take on a look I've not done before.

This is a style I'd been longing to explore for a while, and the Bolder Boulder poster was the perfect project for it. I used to utilize color gradients very sparingly but in this piece, nearly every shape has a noticeable gradient. Despite its freshness, the poster still falls comfortably into my body of work.

Last year, I tried something new by creating the 2013 race poster on my iPad. The tool of creation was different but the style was more typical of my portfolio.

I may not be running the race, but this year I broke a new record with the Bolder Boulder. I plan to create more artwork in this style and get better at it.

New Poster Series: Historic Schools

New Poster Series: Historic Schools

I created a series of seven of posters of historic schools in and around Boulder, Colorado, commissioned as a fundraiser for the Boulder Valley School District. Each features a great, old house of learning with its inspirational architecture. All proceeds from sales will go toward the school district.

I've been pushing my poster style away from flat colors to nuanced use of gradients. I still work with the same kind of simplified shapes I've been creating for years. I merely color them differently. With advanced gradients, I can achieve a richer sense of light and depth in my art. This series gave me the opportunity to really explore this transformation of my aesthetic.

New Art: Modern Houses

Real estate company, Mod Boulder, specializes in brokering modern homes in Colorado. I've worked with them from the beginning having designed their logo and other promotional items.

Because modern architecture varies in style, I created this new design to showcase some common types of mod homes. The architecture is important, but real estate is about finding people the right home for their lifestyle. That's what this piece is about. Visually, it comes across almost like a game, and the question forces you to think about your lifestyle and your dream home.

So tell me, what kind of modern are you?

New Art: Jamestown Fourth of July

I live in a very small mountain town  - Jamestown, Colorado - near Boulder. It may be small, but we know how to party. Coming up is our annual 4th of July bash which includes a pancake breakfast, Main Street parade, games, contests, raffles, BBQ, and live music from 8:00am to 10:30pm! People come from across Colorado.

This year, I illustrated a t-shirt which will be sold to locals and visitors. Proceeds go to our volunteer fire department to help get Colorado through the fire season.

The art features the stone town hall and the historic Mercantile Cafe. I thought it'd be fun to depict the townsfolk as bears, since bears live with us here in the Rocky Mountains.

If you're nearby, head to 6,926 feet elevation this 4th of July for an all-American good time.
